Go Away Big Green Monster

Last week we read a story called
Go Away Big Green Monster by Ed Emberley.

The squeals of delight told me this story was a hit!
KR LOVED this story and wanted me to read it several times.

We had a lot of fun making our own monsters.

The children chose what colour they wanted their monster to be.

We completed a sheet with missing colour words to describe our monster and then we labelled our monsters.

This was a tricky activity but my little 'SMARTIES' tried hard and did a fabulous job!!

If you would like to listen to this story go HERE.

I started my Long Service Leave on Tuesday.
The children are in capable hands with Mrs Jones and I  look forward to seeing everyone again in 4 weeks time.

Clifford the Big Red Dog

As part of our unit on colours,
we read Clifford the Big Red Dog for the colour red.

Here is our display of Clifford.

We also did a writing activity and wrote the missing word in the sentence
Clifford is a big _______ dog.

Kiara was away the day we made Clifford so she took the activity home and made it at home.
Well done Kiara.

Writing Time and 'having-a-go'!

Writing for some children can be overwhelming. There is a lot of processing involved and the children are all at different stages of development.

Of course practice makes perfect so we write many times during the day for many different purposes.

Today we were learning about having- a- go and stretching out words. To do this the children say the word slowly and then try to write the letters for the sounds they can hear. It is important to be positive and praise all efforts.

For example: If they were writing the word 'bird' and only wrote the first and last letter of the word, that would be a fantastic have-a-go and I would be excited and praise their effort
Some children may only be able to hear the first letter and that is an exciting achievement also.

We have small whiteboards which are great for the children to experiment on.

We have been learning many sight words in reading and writing and some children are attempting to use these when writing their sentences.

Fun With Colours

We have been having a lot of fun with colours in KR.
Last week we talked about why yellow was a good colour for raincoats.
We cut out this yellow raincoat and pasted it onto newspaper which made the yellow stand out against the grey.

I am still getting the hang of my new iphone so my photos are not that good yet but practice makes perfect... I hope!

We also read the story Clifford the Big Red Dog and made Clifford.
Here we are busy cutting him out.

I will take some photos of our display tomorrow.

I know valentines day was several weeks ago but here is our 'Hearty' display.

The children got to make their heart with their favourite colour.

We did a little writing activity and the children wrote who their heart was for.
You will have to ask them who they chose!??

Today we had a lot of fun making a graph to see which colour we would spin the most. We had a spinner board with all the colours on it. The children spun the spinner and then coloured the box for the colour spun. We ran out of time so they are not finished yet. I will post the finished graphs tomorrow.

I was so impressed at how well the children did the activity today. It is hard to believe they have only been at school for 5 weeks.

Here we are doing our graphs.

Don't forget you are welcome to pop your head into our room at any time.
I know the children would love to show you what we have been up to.
